Dr. Hanna Wirman @TEDxHK2012

Dr. Hanna Wirman, researcher in touch screen technology for Orangutan enclosure enrichments, was invited to speak to the annual TEDxHong Kong 2012, themed “The Future of Fun” for this year with more than 800 attendees.

Hanna is generally interested in non-human animals as users of latest computer technologies and is currently researching and designing games for orangutans. She suggests that design for strangers like apes allow us dig into what and who we are as designers in order to revise our practices and to make more grounded decisions. Such design serves to raise awareness around Orangutans’ endangered status and bring much-needed enrichment to the lives of captive individuals.

Currently a visiting professor of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Dr. Wirman’s research was focused in developing enrichments for Orangutans through gaming interactions on touch screens. Her game devices already on testing phase at the Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue Centre in North Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Masarang Hong Kong and the Garuda Airlines, our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partner, have close partnerships with Dr. Wirman’s research and we are excited to see advancements in enclosure enrichments in benefits of the great apes.
